What this calculator does

This shift calculator measures the length of a single shift. It deducts unpaid breaks and handles shifts that cross midnight, returning net work time, decimal hours and optional estimated pay.

Formula

If end time ≤ start time, the end is counted on the following day.
Shift length = end − start
Net work time = shift length − unpaid break
Decimal hours = net work time in minutes ÷ 60

Worked example

Example (shown in US dollars): A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 with a 30-minute unpaid break crosses midnight, so it spans 8 hours. After the break, net work time is 7 h 30 min (7.50 decimal hours). At $20 per hour, estimated pay is $150.00. Use the currency selector to display the same amount with another symbol.

How the calculation works

  1. Enter your shift start and end times. Overnight shifts are detected automatically.
  2. Enter the total unpaid break time in minutes.
  3. Optionally add an hourly wage to estimate pay for the shift.
