What this calculator does

This break calculator deducts unpaid breaks from a shift. Enter your shift start and end times and add each unpaid break to see your gross shift length, total break time and net work time in both time and decimal form.

Formula

Gross shift = end − start (overnight shifts supported)
Total breaks = sum of all unpaid break minutes
Net work time = gross shift − total breaks

Worked example

Example: A 9:00–17:30 shift with a 30-minute lunch and two 10-minute breaks has a gross length of 8 h 30 min, total breaks of 50 min, and net work time of 7 h 40 min (7.67 decimal hours).

How the calculation works

  1. Enter your shift start and end times. Overnight shifts are supported.
  2. Add each unpaid break in minutes — add as many breaks as you need.
  3. Read your gross shift, total breaks and net work time from the results panel.
