What this calculator does

This hours and minutes calculator adds, subtracts and finds elapsed time in hours and minutes. 60 minutes equals 1 hour, and any minutes value of 60 or more is normalized automatically.

Formula

60 minutes = 1 hour
Decimal hours = (total hours × 60 + total minutes) ÷ 60
Elapsed time: if end ≤ start, the end is counted on the following day.

Worked example

Examples: Adding 2 h 45 min and 1 h 35 min gives 4 h 20 min. Subtracting 2 h 45 min from 8 h 30 min gives 5 h 45 min. Elapsed time from 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 h 00 min (480 min, 8.00 decimal hours) because the span crosses midnight.

How the calculation works

  1. To add, enter hours and minutes on each row and use "Add row" for more values. Minutes are normalized automatically (for example, 90 min becomes 1 h 30 min).
  2. To subtract, enter two hours-and-minutes values; the calculator returns the difference.
  3. To find elapsed time, enter a start and end time. Spans that cross midnight are handled automatically.

Common questions

How are minutes normalized?

Any minutes value of 60 or more is converted into whole hours. For example, entering 1 hour 75 minutes becomes 2 h 15 min.

Can the elapsed time span midnight?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than or equal to the start time, the end is counted on the following day.
