What this calculator does

This decimal hours calculator converts between hours-and-minutes and decimal hours in both directions. To convert minutes to decimal hours, divide the number of minutes by 60.

Formula

Decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60)
Examples: 15 min = 0.25 h, 30 min = 0.50 h, 45 min = 0.75 h
Converting back: whole hours = integer part; minutes = decimal part × 60

Worked example

Example: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 decimal hours. In the other direction, 8.5 decimal hours is 8 h 30 min.

Two decimal places is common for payroll. This calculator shows two decimals and rounds to the nearest minute when converting back.
