Decimal Hours Explained

Decimal hours are a way of writing time that makes payroll math simple. Instead of 7 hours 30 minutes, you write 7.50 hours. This guide explains what decimal hours are, why they are used, and how to convert in both directions without mistakes.

What decimal hours are

A time written in decimal hours has a whole-number hours part and a fractional part that represents the minutes as a fraction of an hour. For example, 8 hours 15 minutes becomes 8.25 hours, and 3 hours 45 minutes becomes 3.75 hours. The minutes are no longer shown as a separate number from 0 to 59; they are folded into the decimal portion.

This format is convenient because you can multiply decimal hours directly by an hourly rate. Multiplying 7.50 by $20 gives $150.00 in one step, whereas multiplying 7 hours 30 minutes by $20 requires converting the minutes first.

Why payroll and time systems use them

Payroll systems, time clocks and invoicing tools use decimal hours because minutes do not divide evenly into the decimal currency units most wages are paid in. A minute is 1/60 of an hour, which is 0.0166… recurring. Working in hours-and-minutes forces repeated conversions; working in decimal hours lets the system multiply once and move on.

Decimal hours also make it easy to add time across many days or employees without carrying minutes into the hours column manually. The totals stay in a single numeric field.

The formula: minutes ÷ 60

To convert minutes into the decimal part of an hour, divide the number of minutes by 60. Add the result to your whole hours. That is the entire conversion.

To go the other direction, split the decimal value into its whole-number part and its fractional part. The whole number is your hours. Multiply the fractional part by 60 to get the minutes, rounding to the nearest whole minute.

Whole hours = integer part of the decimal
Minutes = fractional part × 60 (rounded to the nearest minute)

Worked example

Convert 7.75 decimal hours back to hours and minutes. The whole part is 7 hours. The fractional part is 0.75, and 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes. So 7.75 decimal hours is 7 hours 45 minutes. Going the other way, 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 decimal hours.

Common mistakes

The single most common mistake is treating the minutes as the decimal directly — writing 30 minutes as .30 instead of .50. Remember the decimal is a fraction of 60, not the minute count. Another common error is rounding too early: convert at the end of a calculation, not after each day, so small rounding differences do not accumulate.

A third mistake is mixing formats. If a payroll system expects decimal hours, enter 7.50 rather than 7:30 or 7.30. The format matters as much as the value.

Is 30 minutes 0.30 hours?

No. Thirty minutes is 0.50 hours because 30 ÷ 60 = 0.50. The decimal part is a fraction of an hour, not the minute count.

How many decimal places should I use?

Two decimal places is standard for payroll. It is precise to the nearest minute (0.01 hours ≈ 0.6 minutes) and matches most payroll systems.
